Customer name: Jeff Sporcich
City/State: Westminster, California
Where do you fish/launch? I usually launch and fish out of Newport Harbor down towards Crystal Cove. I don't really like launching through the surf zone so I try to launch in the harbor whenever I can. Sometimes I fish Doheny State Beach.
What kind of fish do you catch or target? When I fish Newport area I catch a variety of fish, calico and sand bass, mackerel, white seabass, sculpin, halibut, sheepshead and numerous shallow water rockfish (I release all rockfish I catch). I usually do not target a specific fish in any area I fish.
What kind of lures, jigs or live bait do you use? I use a lot of plastics like fishtraps (all different color patterns) or berkley powergrubs in rootbeer color (these catch almost everything in the ocean), but I also use Krocodile spoons quite a bit. I usually do not use live bait, but if I do I try to get live ghost shrimp or jacksmelt.
What kind of kayak do you have? I have a Hobie Maui, but with this years tax refund I am going to buy a Malibu Extreme.
Do you have any good rigging tips for kayak fishing? I think I have my yak rigged like everyone else. I do not like to put holes in my yak, so everything that I have on it, is detachable (attached to the yak with zip ties). I think one of the best riggings tips that I can give is use a milk crate or file crate with pieces of PVC or ABS plastic pipe for rod holders to hold all of your gear. I also have a tall Rubbermaid container that I use for hooping (the tall sides keep the bugs from being able to "jump" out).
