Kayak Fishing in Maryland
Customer name: David Riordan
City/State: I live in Calvert County Maryland. It is basically a peninsula with the Chesapeake Bay to the east and the Patuxent River to the west.
Where do you fish/launch? With all that water the options for water recreation are limitless. The closest launch site at the Patuxent Tiver is about six miles from the house. This is a state park so there are limited hours of access.
What kind of fish do you catch or target? If it swims, I'll try and catch it. Largemouth, crappies blue gills, perch and catfish in ponds and reservoirs. The river offers up the previously mentioned species depending what section of the river (patuxent) you fish, but as I mentioned earlier, the different options are limitless, in two weeks I fished a small private pond, a resevoir, a lake (which Maryland only has manmade lakes, no natural ones) and a tidal river..
What kind of lures, jigs or live bait do you use? I use mostly artificial lures and plastics, but will use live or cut bait at times, depending on the time of year for trolling or chumming.
What kind of kayak do you have? I have just purchased my first kayak. The decision for a kayak was based on experiences with canoes and Jon boats. I found it at Bass Pro Shop a Model Ascend FS10. It is 10' 2" X 31" beam, 325lbs max load, sit inside (I know not a SOT). It came with two flush mounted rod holders, and one front mounted rod holder. It has a rear well for either a crate or five gallon bucket. It also has two cleats on each side of the cockpit, already used them twice (with the trolley system I installed). My major interest is fishing followed by boating and photography. Which brings me to the kayak I chose and why. The biggest factor was cost and what I could afford and still have some money for rigging. The home bank (the wife) gave me a budget of $700.00. The second factor was the main waters I will fish, tight to river banks, skinny water, a lot of overhanging trees and tight spaces.
Rigging on your kayak? I already had a portable fish finder and a handheld GPS so it was just a matter of needing a battery. I found a 12V 7MaH and charger for around $40.00. The next was a trolley, I got all the hardware, blocks, anchor and anchor rode for around $60.00. My fisrt order to Hook1 was two lanyard kits and a bilge pump. The second order placed with Hook1 was for a paddle lanyard and dry bag..
Comments: I am so glad a friend turned me onto your stie. You have some of the best pricing around. One always has that doubt when making that first purchase from an online company, I was not dissapointed! All the products I have purchased so far meet my expectations.

Where do you fish / launch? I mostly fish in the Chesapeake Bay and Ocean City, MAryland. I launch in th bay from Havre de Grace or the bay bridge area.
What kind of fish do you catch or target? I mostly target Striped Bass and Flounder.
Lures, Jigs or Live Bait? I mostly use bucktails, rat-l-traps, cut alewive, minnows, shiners, squid, and live perch or spot.
Kayak Type: I have an Ocean Kayak Scrambler XT Angler. I will be upgrading in the next year or two.
Rigging Tips: I have rigged my kayak with a fishfinder, gps, anchor trolley, camera mount, flag mount, and milk crate. My biggest tip would be to envision your rigging at the time of the kayak purchase. I learned the hard way with the Scrambler. There is very little deck space and no flat surfaces. I have had to be very creative. Also, get yourself a Dremel rotary tool. It's amazing how handy that tool is.
